Tips for Packing the House in your Suitcase

Updated: May 17, 2024

It's been exactly 4 months today since my last blog post, which is way too long. Not wasting any more time on why and how, I'll start directly with today's topic.

I lived alone in Pune for 3 years, completing my undergrad, of which, 2 years I lived in a rented apartment which meant having all the stuff that every household should have. Also, I had brought a lot of things when I came to this city. To cut it short, I had one double door cupboard, 1 double door shoe rack(small) and 1 double door shoe rack(medium) and all of them were fully stuffed, plus a lot of shoes in another bag.

I had 1 large suitcase and 2 duffle bags and 2 backpacks which was clearly not enough. Simple solution, buy new luggage bags, at least 2, in my case. However, that required money which I did not have. But, I had to pack all those things anyhow.

So, these were the 7 things that helped me while packing:

1. Vacuum Storage Bags

I started looking for ways and hacks for packing and this topped the list. I ordered 3 large, 3 medium and 1 small vacuum storage bags which came along with a pump. Easy to use, extremely helpful and very convenient. If it would have not been for these bags, only my clothes would have taken 3 large luggage bag space.

This is how much difference it made (picture borrowed from the internet as I couldn't take due to lack of time). I stored all my clothes in 3 large bags and every bag had about 15-20 clothes.

This is something I would use and recommend not just for packing but also for long term storage.

2. Shoe Bags

I am obsessed with my shoes and clothes and I would like to have them safely packed so that it doesn't get damage. Keeping shoes in shoe bags allows for packing it along with the clothes and other things and not getting them dirty. Also, I had to throw away all the shoe boxes and I knew there wouldn't be any covered place for them at home, the keeping them in these bags would be safe them from dust and damage.

I bought these drawstring bags and they have a transparent plastic to identify the shoes in them without opening each bag.

3. Strong Cloth Bags

Since I was travelling in train, I did not had to worry much about the weight of my luggage. Along with my luggage and duffle bag, I used big cloth bags for packing things that were light and not-so-important, because even if I had to adjust some things or by any chance had to leave out anything then it would be this bag. However, I carried all my bags with myself, which was very difficult but a good thing. You can get these bags from any super market.

4. Duffle Bags

I had 2 duffle bags which had all my electronic and kitchen items like straightener, curler, toaster, electric kettle, garment steamer, sauce pan, bowls, everything along with other small things which managed to get adjusted in it. This was again of huge help to me.

5. Compact Packing

The most important thing was making space for each and everything, which means being able to fit things into things, this again saved a lot of space.

6. Selling Things

Before packing I sold all my furniture, bed, table, cupboards, everything which helped me make some money. With that money I bought another luggage bag, which was needed or else i could not have packed all my things.

7. Borrow

Another thing one can do is borrow bags from someone who's able to lend it to you, making sure you can return it to them. This was this first option that I had but unfortunately I could not arrange it. This would save a lot of money and you can use that money for something else.

These are all the things that I used while packing and all of them helped me. If you are planning a trip and looking for ways to pack in small space, this might be of some help.
