Clothing: Hourglass/Pear Shape

Updated: May 17, 2024

For the longest time, I had absolutely no clue on what type of clothes suit me well. My hometown did not have H&M or Zara or Forever 21. We only had Lee and Levis (yeah! We were urban poor) which was expensive for us and our parents wouldn’t let us shop there. It was only after the 6th grade that I started wearing branded clothes and I guess, Lee was my first ‘brand’. But even then, I did not wear very the correct type of clothes, I was a chubby person, I still am but a little lesser now. All I knew was that I should wear loose clothes even though they were not of my size.

I assume this happens with all parents when you are kids your parents’ dressing sense is amazing and then as you grow up it starts falling, I have no clue why and how, but this is what happened with my parents. So the style and the type of clothes that I wore did not complement my body, at all.

FYI, I am a mix of the hourglass and pear-shaped body, my upper body is hour shaped and my thighs are heavy, hence the pear shape. So I have to go through a lot of clothes, especially jeans to find my perfect fit. After searching a lot on the internet about the body shapes and what clothes fit my body type well, I’ve somehow managed to dress in a way that will enhance my body.

Here I am, sharing with you 5 tips that I’ve learned and figured out about clothing for my body type. Also, I am just sharing my opinion about the type of clothes I find flattering on me, and it might not necessarily be your taste, which is completely fine.

1. HIGH WAISTED PANTS

High waisted jeans or trousers are the best inventions of mankind. Out of all the styling tips, this is my favorite. From the moment I realized that high waisted jeans or leggings, makes my leg look longer, I have switched all my mid and low waist denim with high waist one and I have never ever regretted this change. It does not only make my legs a bit thinner but also gives an illusion that I am taller than what my actual height is.

2. CROP TOP

Crop tops do pretty much the same thing that high waisted pants do. They make an illusion of a taller silhouette. These two have been my life savior and probably the only set that I wear in college considering I don’t make an effort to dress up for it. The length of the crop top may vary depending on your comfort, I like mine to end a little below the belly button. In case you have a similar body type as mine or just want to look taller, this is your go-to style.

3. CINCHED DRESS

This is another type of clothing that suits and complements my body type. Look for clothes that cinch especially the smallest area, this shifts the focus to my cinched area from my lower body which is very flattering. Also, A-Line dresses have been my best friend for quite some time now and they really suit my body type well.

4. SHORT DRESS/SKIRT

Short dresses or skirts, which end up above the knee looks more flattering than midis for someone with my height, they make your body linear and gives you length. For girls with similar body type but who are blessed with a good height, this tip might also be helpful to you.

5. POINTY TOE FOOTWEAR

I am generally a sneaker girl, even though I have a lot of heels as well. Lately, I’ve only been buying pointed heels and I’ve noticed the difference it makes to my height and body. I don’t wear flats much, it’s either sneakers or High heels, there’s no in between. However, pointy flats have the same effect as pointy toe heels

Example for Points 3, 4 and 5

These are the 5 things that I’ve adapted and made a huge difference to my personal style. I am still evolving and trying to find clothes that suit my body type focusing on the good features. Having said that, I am not trying to body shame, anyone, I have always wanted to look the best that I can and these are few of the things that have helped me and may help others too.

I hope you like this post and share it even with your friends. Also, share your pictures if you use any of these tips on the facebook page @theuralway or on my Instagram @theuralway.

Until next time,

Love & Hugs.
