Books for Beginners

Updated: May 17, 2024

I started reading books at a very young age but during that time I read them for fun or at times to show off my reading. It was not until the start of my middle school that I developed an interest in reading books and made it my hobby. My love for books started with Barbie and fairytale books that I used to buy from the annual Scholastic book fair our school had.

The first book that I remember reading in my 6th grade was ‘Little Women’ by Louisa May Alcott and I loved it. I finished the entire book within 2 or 3 days. From that time onwards, my love for books only kept snowballing and I’ve read a lot of books from that time and will only increase.

Not everyone starts reading early, but better late than never right! I’m going to share with you 5 books that I read which I enjoyed thoroughly when I started. So, if you ever feel like reading a book, you could try them. I love fiction, fantasy, and thriller and this takes the majority of my space.

1. ‘HOUSE OF NIGHT’ by P.C. AND KRISTIN KAST

‘House of Night’ series by the mother-daughter duo P.C. Kast and Kristin Kast was my first vampire book and I instantly fell in love with the book, the world, and the characters. I read this book when I started my 7th grade. It had a fantasy, romance, and fiction, my ingredients for a perfect book. As I’m writing this, there is a flashback of scenes from the book playing in my head. This is a 12 books series and I've read 10 of them because the other two books were not out by then and I had shifted to different books by the time they came out. Since this was my first, I recommend it to you as well.

2. ‘THE COLOUR PURPLE’ by ALICE WALKER

Another book which I read was ‘The Colour Purple’ by Alice Walker. I read this book in my 8th grade and this was the time when I read a lot of books, like on an average of 2 books every month. So I don’t remember what exactly the story was but it was about an African-American woman who was sexually abused by her father and about her life after that. This book addressed a lot of social issues as well and it forced me to seriously think about the status of women in society. This is another book which I recommend.

3. ‘RIGHT FIT WRONG SHOE’ by VARSHA DIXIT

This book was a fast read, didn’t even take 2 days for me to read the entire book. This book is a good option for anyone wanting to read something which does not require a lot of attention. This book has a very predictable love story, rich boy, middle-class girl, friends from a young age. If you are a Bollywood fan then you will definitely enjoy reading it.

4. ‘ANGEL’ TRILOGY by L. A. WEATHERLY

‘Angel’ trilogy, again, is a romance, thriller, fantasy and supernatural series which I loved reading during my school days. My love for fiction and romance is extremely palpable from the choice of books I had. I enjoyed reading this book and I feel anyone who is not very critical in their way of reading would like it.

5. ‘THE FAULT IN OUR STARS’ by JOHN GREEN

Almost everyone in the world is familiar with the book because of the movie that was made. However, I suggest that you should read the book because there were a lot of parts in the book which was not included in the movie and a lot of scenes were cinematized to suit the needs of the movie for obvious reasons. Everyone loved the movie and a lot of people read the book after watching the movie and I am sure you will like it too.

These are just 5 of the books that I read during my amateur reading days, which may help you kick start your reading habit. I strongly believe that each and every one of us has an interest in a certain genre and that is where you may start your journey. Books have been my best friends for years, reading is like escaping my problems and entering an entirely different universe where I see the world from a different person’s perspective. Having said all of that, I am no expert in this field, these are just a few suggestions which I think might help someone.
